Description

I fondly remember the sci-fi books of my youth: no more than about 1/2" thick, mostly space opera - the industry had moved on from 'pulps,' and I had graduated from things like the hardback Tom Swift series that I picked up at the library, to my very own paperbacks, bought with my allowance and found on a rotating wire rack at the local drug store or Village Pantry.

I also remember series like Perry Rhodan or the novels from "Laser Books" that had cool covers by Kelly Freas, and while I've been working on my latest starship, its outlandishness made me want to use it on an equally-outlandish book cover, something that harkened back to those exciting tomes with often-implausible but always eye-catching covers. 1970, we're back!

The font for "Star Trek" was inspired by the old Gold Key comics' covers, as well; I found that exact font, but I didn't really like the way it looked on a paperback, so I tried the correct title font, but I split and 'bent' it the same way the Gold Key titles were 'bent' - I like the mix of the style with the design.

DAW never published Star Trek, obviously, but they just struck me as an obvious choice for this particular style and layout. And, yes, Jonathan Betuel is listed as the writer for the movie The Last Starfighter ;).
