Description

After rendering my fingers to the bone, working on art for the 2016 Ships of the Line Design Contest, I decided to have some fun and go retro again. I've done a couple of contemporary covers for Crossbow, and I thought it might be fun to try something more like the original covers for the James Blish novelizations, especially since this ship was designed to fit into the latter years of TOS. Still, I couldn't resist following some of my own design preferences, namely overlapping the elements to give it a bit of a dimensional feel.

As for the author, H. Beam Piper had a great feel for characters and plot, and perhaps in an alternate universe, he would have lived to enjoy his success, and lent a hand to another generation of Star Trek adaptations.

As a book cover, it's a melancholy might-have-been (one can only *wish* that Piper had lived to write more, and had lent his talent to Star Trek) but as art, this is really fantastic; it perfectly captures the feel of an old sci-fi paperback cover.
